Long-term collaborations with our founders, partners and sponsors have enabled us to realise unique projects focused on preserving Vincent van Gogh’s legacy for future generations.
The Vincent van Gogh Foundation, Sompo Japan Nipponkoa Insurance, the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science, and the BankGiro Loterij are the Van Gogh Museum’s four founders and benefactors.
Vincent van Gogh Foundation
The Vincent van Gogh Foundation owns the Van Gogh Museum collection and also contributes to various museum projects. For example, the foundation has contributed to research into the collection of 19th-century French prints, the publication of this print collection on the museum website and the acquisition of 91 prints by Camille Pissarro.
Sompo Japan Nipponkoa Insurance (SJNK)
Founded in 1888, Japan’s largest indemnity insurance firm expanded operations into Europe in 1995. Support from SJNK contributed to the realisation of our new Entrance Hall (designed by Kisho Kurokawa Architect & Associates) in September 2015.
Ministry of Education, Culture and Science
The Van Gogh Museum receives an annual subsidy from the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science.
The BankGiro Loterij is the Netherlands’ leading cultural lottery, supporting good causes related to culture and the preservation of Dutch cultural heritage.
Since 1998, this lottery has made a substantial annual contribution to the acquisition of new works for our collection. The BankGiro Loterij also helped fund the construction of the new Entrance Hall.
In recent years, support from the BankGiro Loterij has also enabled us to enrich the collection with works by artists including Maurice Denis and Edvard Munch.
Van Lanschot has been a main partner of the museum since the opening of the new entrance hall in 2015. The Brabant connection is one of the many common denominators shared by Van Lanschot and the Van Gogh Museum.
This collaboration has already secured two SponsorRing awards (in 2016 and 2018) in the Art & Culture category. Van Lanschot and the Van Gogh Museum both have a rich Dutch history and are both connected with the province of Brabant. We organise activities for Van Lanschot clients including special guided tours, workshops and unique events at the museum.

On 2 July 2019, high-tech company ASML entered into a long-term partnership with the Van Gogh Museum, in which state-of-the-art technology and Van Gogh’s quest for colour and light will take centre stage.
‘Born and bred in Brabant, Vincent van Gogh was a rebel and a trailblazer’, says Peter Wennink, CEO and President of ASML. ‘He was inspired by light and it was key to his work, as it is to ours. This partnership provides us with the opportunity to help to preserve the heritage of Van Gogh in Amsterdam, and through this heritage, to share our expertise on light with a wide audience’.
